Perfectionism Is the Thief of Progress (And Probably Your Business Breakthrough)

Let’s Talk About That Voice in Your Head

You know the one I mean.

The one that says:

“This has to be perfect before I launch it.”
“I’ll just tweak the logo for the 47th time, then I’ll share it.”
“I can’t go live until I lose ten pounds / fix my lighting / rehearse for another hour.”

Friend, I love you—but that voice? That’s not excellence. That’s perfectionism dressed up as productivity.
And it’s stealing your time, your peace, and your business growth.

How do I know? Because I’ve BEEN her. I was her. And some days, I still catch her lurking in the corner with a clipboard and a critical glare.

But now I know how to call her out—and coach others through it.

Perfectionism: A Holy-Sounding Excuse for Playing Small

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Perfectionism feels productive, but it’s just fear in a fancy outfit.

It’s fear of failure. Fear of judgment. Fear of being “too much” or “not enough.”

But in the Kingdom, obedience > optics.

And as a business coach for faith-driven entrepreneurs, I see this all the time:

Clients with a fire in their spirit and a God-given message—but they won’t post, launch, speak, or sell until everything is “just right.”

But let me ask you something:

  • When has “just right” ever actually happened?

Spoiler alert: It hasn’t. Because perfection is a moving target set by someone else's highlight reel.

What Perfectionism Actually Costs You

Let’s get real about the hidden price tag:

  • TimeYou lose hours (even weeks) overthinking instead of executing.
  • Energy – You stay stuck in the cycle of tweaking instead of trusting.
  • Opportunities – You delay your launch while someone else is showing up messy and making money.
  • Connection – You rob your audience of the real, relatable you.
  • Revenue – You keep your business broke while making your fear feel safe.

Sis, it’s not serving you. And it’s definitely not scaling your business.

My Personal Wake-Up Call (AKA: $2,500 Worth of Conviction)

You wanna know what finally snapped me out of my perfectionism paralysis?

It wasn’t a sticky note or a podcast quote.

It was spending over $2,500 on a “coaching” program that promised clarity, consistency, and cashflow—but delivered chaos, confusion, and compromise.

This program was marketed as a passive-income dream. Affiliate marketing with a “proven system.”

But what I didn’t know was that the system involved:

  • Creating fake Meta profiles across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads
  • Buying burner phones and private proxies
  • Using AI-generated images of fictional people to impersonate a brand
  • Dodging shutdowns, suspensions, and constant account blocks
  • And pretending this was all normal business strategy

Meanwhile, I was a corporate mom of two under five, trying to rebrand and relaunch my LLC—after surviving a wilderness season of miscarriages, surgeries, cross-state relocations, home renovations, C-sections, and funerals.

I didn’t have the bandwidth for deception. And deep down, I knew it didn’t align with my values.
But perfectionism had me believing I needed their blueprint to succeed.

I was outsourcing my discernment.
I was sacrificing peace for performance.
And I was letting fear wear the mask of strategy.

The real gut-check came when I realized:

  • I was paying monthly for something that didn’t sit well with my soul.
  • I was sacrificing my peace at the altar of perfection.
  • And I was allowing fear to dictate my business moves.

That’s when I knew: something had to change.

Progress Over Perfection = Holy Ground

Let me say this plainly: God doesn’t need your polish—He wants your participation.

There is so much grace in imperfect action. So much power in starting before you're ready.

Your audience isn’t craving perfection. They’re craving permission—to be real, to be raw, to be honest. And that starts with YOU going first.

That’s why I created the 10-Day Imperfect Action Challenge. It’s built for entrepreneurs who are stuck in their heads but ready to move with heart. No shame. No fluff. Just daily, doable steps toward momentum.

7 Ways Perfectionism Shows Up in Business (And What to Do Instead)

Let’s call out a few patterns, shall we?

1. Over-editing your social media captions for hours.

  • Try this: Write it, skim it, post it. People connect with your voice, not your grammar.

2. Avoiding video because your background isn’t “on brand.”

  • Try this: Sit near a window, speak from the heart, hit publish.

3. Never launching because it’s not “ready yet.”

  • Try this: Pre-sell your offer. Let interest lead the way. Build as you go.

4. Changing your niche every 6 weeks.

5. Obsessing over your logo, colors, and fonts.

  • Try this: Pick 3 colors, 2 fonts, and call it a day. Your impact isn’t in your hex codes.

6. Holding back content because someone else already said it.

  • Try this: Say it your way. Your voice is the value.

7. Hiding until everything feels aligned.

  • Try this: Step into visibility as you are. God doesn’t need you polished—just present.

The Faith Factor: What If “Good Enough” Is God’s Green Light?

Here’s a little Holy Spirit download I’ve come to live by:

Sometimes, “good enough” is anointed.

"God can’t bless what you’re still hiding in your drafts. He moves through the action, not the anxiety."

Remember the servant who buried his talent because he was afraid of doing it wrong?
He didn’t get praised for playing it safe. He got rebuked for letting fear run the show.

Let’s not be that servant.

3 Questions to Break the Perfectionism Loop

If you’re feeling stuck, ask yourself:

  • Am I procrastinating to protect my ego—or to honor God?
  • Would I rather be “perfect” or purposeful?
  • What’s the cost of staying silent when I was called to speak?

If your answers sting a little? That’s your cue to move.

Final Thoughts: Perfection Isn’t the Standard—Purpose Is.

You don’t need a flawless funnel before you serve.
You don’t need polished branding before you launch.
You don’t need permission from your inner critic to be obedient.

You just need to start.
Imperfectly. Boldly. Faithfully.

Because your people are waiting. And your freedom is on the other side of action.
