Google Is About to Display Your Email Promotions in Search — Here’s Why That’s a Problem

Privacy-Proof Your Marketing Series, Part 1
Estimated read time 4-5 minutes

Just when you thought Google Merchant Center couldn’t get any sneakier — BAM — they’ve announced a new "helpful" update that quietly opts you into letting your email promotions become public-facing content in Google Search and the Shopping tab.

Let me say that louder for the people in the back:

Your private email promos might be scraped and displayed by Google — starting April 3, 2025 — whether you meant for them to be public or not.

Yep. Welcome to the future of “helpful” automation.

What Is This Update About?

Google sent out an email titled “Amplify your marketing efforts with your email content on Google.” And on the surface, it sounds great. They want to help your business by automatically pulling content from your marketing emails — things like:

  • Promo prices
  • Discount codes
  • New product drops
  • Social media links
  • Holiday sales and special offers

This information can then appear across Search, the Shopping tab, and other placements. 🎉 (Or 🫠 depending on your perspective.)

Why This Might Backfire — Big Time

Let’s be real: This is one of those updates that sounds helpful until you think it through.

Here’s where the red flags start waving:

1. Private Deals Could Become Public

If you send exclusive offers to your email list (like VIP subscriber-only sales or custom discount codes), those prices might get pulled and displayed to the general public — even if you never intended them to be visible in your catalog or site metadata.

2. Price Mismatch Warnings

Google Merchant Center is notorious for flagging "pricing inconsistency" violations. If Google scrapes a discount code from an email and matches it to a product listing that doesn’t reflect that discount in your feed…

👉 You could get hit with warnings or even account suspensions.

3. You Might Not Even Know It's Happening

By default, you were automatically opted in on April 3, 2025. So unless you specifically go in and disable this in your Merchant Center settings, Google’s little AI bots are already busy sniffing around your emails.

From the Desk of a Digital Marketing Strategist

I’ve run Google Merchant Center feeds for my own Shopify store and managed dozens of product catalogs for clients across industries. And let me tell you — this is not a “set it and forget it” moment.

If you’ve ever had a product disapproved for something silly like a cents-off discrepancy, you know how rigid Google can be with automated pricing checks.

Now imagine those same bots making assumptions based on your Black Friday teaser email from three months ago. 😬

Here’s What You Should Do (Before It’s Too Late)

If you're an e-commerce entrepreneur (especially one who uses exclusive email marketing campaigns), I highly recommend you take these steps:

1. Check your Merchant Center settings.

Go to: Settings > Content Settings > Email Content Usage
→ Turn it OFF if you don’t want Google mining your emails.

2. Gated your email promotions.

Avoid hosting full email promos on public-facing URLs that can be indexed or scraped.

If you want to offer a promo, do it officially through structured sale_price attributes.

4. Audit your emails and site metadata.

Make sure none of your private promotions are published publicly unless you're okay with Google finding them.

So, Is This a Helpful Update or a Data Overreach?

It depends on who you ask.

If you’re a business owner who barely has time to update your catalog and would love for Google to just do the work — maybe this sounds like a win.

But if you care about exclusive subscriber-only offers, accurate pricing, and controlling your brand narrative, this move feels a little… invasive.

Automation is only as helpful as it is accurate — and when it comes to AI scraping your email promos, accuracy isn’t always guaranteed.

Final Word from Coach Kelly

You’ve worked hard to build trust with your email subscribers. If Google starts airing those offers out in public like laundry on a clothesline, that trust — and your profit margins — could take a hit.

So keep your content clean, your promos strategic, and your Merchant Center settings locked down like Fort Knox.

And as always…

Don’t let the robots run your business. Stay smart, stay sovereign, and stay savvy.
